Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan

Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), otherwise known, as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is a nurse who has continued their education to become a master’s prepared nurse, specializing in a specific area and or type of population. Advanced practice nurses scope of practice varies based on the state in which they are practicing as well as the length of time they have been practicing. When practicing as an APRN you will be in a leadership role with a significant amount of autonomy. The purpose….Throughout this paper, the scope of practice, competencies, and leadership of an APRN in the states of Maryland will be discussed.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

APN Scope of Practice

After graduation, I intend to practice in the state of Maryland. In the state of Maryland, the regulatory body that governs nursing practice is the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), defined by the Nurse Practice Act. “The Maryland Board of Nursing must review and approve all Nurse Practitioner Programs before certifying applicants as Advanced Practice Nurses” (MBON, 2017).Page or para? Quote. In the state of Maryland, an APN must have a non-restricted registered nurse license in the state of Maryland or a compact state. In addition, the APN must complete and pass a graduate level APN program that is approved by the MBON. After completing the board approved, graduate level program the APN must obtain a national certification in any area in which they intend to practice.

During the time, the APN is awaiting certification in the state of Maryland they do have the ability to “practice as a nurse practitioner graduate before certification in this State upon approval of the Board” (MBON, 2017). This means that once you have graduated from your board approved graduate program and while you are awaiting certification you may practice under the supervision of another experienced board certified APN for 18 months. Even after an APN has passed all required certification exams, they must have a collaborative relationship with another APN who has full authority to practice for a total of 18 months. After 18 months of this collaborative relationship in the state of Maryland, an APN specifically in regards to a nurse practitioner has full practice rights. “For the first eighteen months after licensure an NP must have a collaborative relationship with a physician or NP who has full practice authority” (Scope of Practice Policy, 2019).Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Once a APN, nurse practitioner, and after completing the 18 months, you then have the ability to practice as an independent provider, it is not required to practice under a physician. In this role, you have the authority to perform patient assessments, order needed testing, diagnose, and prescribe medication. In the state of Maryland, you are considered a primary care provider. As an APN in Maryland, you have the authority to dispense, prepare, and or prescribe any drug within ones scope of practice, as long as the regulations of proper dispensing, documentation and record keeping are followed.  Nursing practitioners have a lot of autonomy in Maryland with the proper certification and experience.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Nurse Practitioner  Core Competencies

A core competency area I believe I have personal strength in is the Ethic Competency. The ethic competency states the APN will have “Ethical considerations in decision making in clinical practice and applications of ethical principles in policymaking and in care delivery”(NONPF, 2017). As an emergency room nurse in a well-known tourist town, I treat patients of all different cultural, socioeconomic, and ethical backgrounds. I feel that I have a strong awareness of ethics and routinely include the patient and there family dynamic in decision-making. I find ethics to be one of the most important aspects of all healthcare.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Another competency I find I have strengths in is the Health Delivery System competency. This competency affects the healthcare system as a whole. This competency focuses on “knowledge of organizational practices and complex systems to improve health care delivery” (NONPF, 2017). As a practicing registered nurse in an acute care setting I integrate hospital policies, procedures, routine changes due to evidence based, best practice, into my patient care routinely. The care I provide is constantly changing based on new information and polices. Working in an acute care setting as a travel nurse, I have become very flexible and versed in not only learning but also applying an organizations practice into healthcare delivery.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

?A competency in which I find I could use personal growth on is the Independent Practice Competency. As an emergency room nurse, I have the ability to refer to a provider at any time. I have never been in a position to practice independently. Under the independent practice competency, you are expected to “demonstrates the highest level of accountability for professional practice” (NONPF, 2017). As a staff nurse that is not something I am not qualified to practice and thus leaves me no experience in the area. During the master’s program in order to achieve the nurse practitioner competency of independent practice I could wisely chose my clinical facility. In order to become a successful independent practitioner who demonstrates at the highest level I must have the foundation and preparation to do so. This can only be achieved by learning and practicing while going to school. If the facility I chose to use for clinical does thorough assessments and provides excellent care to their patients I will have the opportunity to be successful.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Another competency in which I find I need growth in is Practice Inquire Competencies. While I am well versed in implementing new policies and changes I am not at all experienced in being the leader of implement the knowledge into practice. As a NP under this competency, it is your role to “provides leadership in the translation of new knowledge into practice” (NONPF, 2017). While become a mastered prepared NP one activity I could do to better prepare in this competency area is join the changes based on evidence committee at my hospital. This committee is made up of directors, NP’s, pharmacy, and staff nurses. The purpose of this committee is to present new knowledge based on best practice and to come up with polices to implement this knowledge into practice. I feel if I joined this committee it would help me transition from simply implementing what I am told is best, into being the knowledge on why we should implement something into our practice. Leadership Skills

Advanced practice nurses are prepared at a graduate level so that they can serve as a change agent in healthcare, thus serving as leaders in the promotion of health across the nation. As a nurse practitioner, you have many roles in leadership “clinical leadership, professional leadership, systems leadership and health policy leadership” (O’Rourke, 2016, ?).Single author? See list reference.

A leadership skill required to lead as a NP within a complex system is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence defined as“the ability to identify, express, and evaluate emotions”(Heering, 2018, ?).Single author?Emotional intelligence is an essential skill as a NP as you must be able to effectively be able to promote good communication, build trust and rapport with staff and patients, all while creating a environment that is caring and compassionate. All of the principles are easily available when one has fostered a sense of emotional intelligence.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Another leadership skill required to lead as a NP is integrity. Integrity is having the ability to make good choices, safe choices even when one disagrees. Integrity is having the ability to adapt to practices and ideas that they may not be accustom in order to respect the patient. An effective leader must be able to adapt and make changes in order to provide safe care, requiring integrity.

Finally, I think the most important leadership skill required to lead as a NP is respect. Respect is essential in not only being able to work as a team with your staff, but in being able to provide the best care for the patients. When working in an environment that presents mutual respect through staff, the practice can be run more smoothly, thus leading to care that is more efficient and an overall better moral. I truly think patients sense when there is good teamwork and respect and are more likely to respect the provider and the plan of care.

A strategy I could use to help develop nurse leadership skills is to practice discipline. In order for my peers and patients to earn a sense of respect of me and my practice I need to be timely. I must be able to keep commitments I make and be efficient. Practicing discipline throughout my graduate program will set me up for success in my future as a NP. Another strategy I could use to develop leadership skills is working on becoming a discerning listener. Meaning someone who does not listen to just hear but listens to improve, accepting constructive criticism, seeing the nonverbal cues. Becoming a discerning listener will help me have better integrity as a provider, and will help me provide the best care. Patients do not always verbalize the severity of their concerns, or sometimes do not have the ability to. Being able to recognize the nonverbal cues is essential.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.

Conclusion

Advanced practice nursing, with specific focus on the nurse practitioner is the future of healthcare. Nurse practitioners are able to practice as independent providers, providing cost efficient holistic care to the community. With the future of healthcare being patient focused, nurse practitioners must be proficient in leadership and having the skills to provide the best care to their patients. Maryland leaves a lot of room for autonomy as a nurse practitioner making it even more important that the graduate level prepared nurse have the skills needed to be competent.Advanced Practice Nurse Professional Development Plan Essay.
