Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Purpose
A baccalaureate nurse understands, relates, and values the fundamental elements of research, process, and designs as a foundation for an evidence-based practice (AACN, 2008; QSEN, 2018). This assignment provides a learning activity for students to demonstrate understanding of quantitative and qualitative research, the purpose and importance of designs, and how research is critical for creating a credible evidence-based nursing practice. Nursing research is research that is utilized to provide support in nursing practices, education, administration, or informatics. The nursing profession is persistently evolving, and nurses should be prepared to adapt to these changes. Therefore, the need for nursing research is vital because it helps nurses develop effective practice guidelines and allows for a better patient outcome by staying updated(Tingen, 2009). This purpose of this essay is to distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research designs by focusing on examples from each, and how they can be used to improve the profession. I will also explain research sampling in quantitative studies and how evidence-based practice can be incorporated in patient care to improve safety.Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Quantitative Research
Quantitative research can be defined as the one where research is descriptive in the form of demographics and numbers. Since quantitative research is based on measurements, it is considered objective. Moreover, a quasi-experimental design is also a type of study used by nurses in the field. This study is used when an intervention is not randomized and used to differentiate the intervention and outcome of the study(Harris, 2006). According to this article, this “design often is used to evaluate the benefits of specific interventions (Harris, 2006).”For example, a nurse may use this method when it comes to fall preventions and compare the intervention and outcome before and after the study. Thus, quantitative research helps improve nursing practice by collecting data on various issues of nursing such as quality of care and the number of the staff. The gathering and analysis of quantitative data makes it easier to get to the cause and by using hypothesis testing to reach the solution.Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Qualitative Research
Unlike quantitative research, qualitative research is a method of observation used to gather non-numerical and descriptive data. It clarifies “what” and “why” related to the topic. Qualitative research gets a better understanding of the experiences of patients before implementing. One type of qualitative research design is ethnographic research. This research focuses on the patient’s traditions or culture (Perreault, 2011). By utilizing this specific research, nurses can study any culture and get a better understanding to help create a better outcome for the patient. Hence, qualitative research enables nurses to be more traditionally aware which leads to improving the nursing practice (Perreault, 2011).Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Research Sampling
Research Sampling “is a formal plan specifying a sampling method, a sample size, and procedure for recruiting participants (Korstjens & Moser, 2018).”Sampling is important because it is difficult to studya large population. Therefore, sampling makes it easier forgatheringdata that we use for research especially when studying large populations. It permits you to draw conclusions about very complex situations and allows you to do your research faster and at a lesser cost. Moreover, purposive sampling is a method also used in quantitative research. With purposive sampling researchers can save money and gather their target research much faster (Korstiens & Moser, 2018). However, I also learned about systemic sampling. In this type of sampling, chosen volunteers from the population begin by choosing a random starting point, for instance they pick the 25th volunteer. After they pick the first volunteer at random (25) the following volunteers for the study will be every 25th individual (Black et al., 2015). Thus, systemic sampling is a good study if one is looking for the least expensive way to research. However, this does not always mean it should be credible or trusted.Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Credible Nursing Practice
As a nurse, it’s important to provide good quality care to my patient. Therefore, by questioning interventions nurses can better the problem and implement the solution. It is through research and gained knowledge that change the clinical nursing practice for the better. Also, by studying credible research nurses can gain knowledge and skills to properly care for their patients. Moreover, by implementing evidence-based practice nurses are evolving the credible nursing practice. Evidence-based practice includes the nurse’s clinical expertise and the patient’s preference. Therefore, it is important to follow evidence-based practiceand be prepared to research scholarly articles.Week 5 Research Designs Assignment Paper.
Conclusion
Overall, this paper has pointed out the importance and need for nursing research. Quantitative and Qualitative research are both efficient methods to gather important research. However, research sampling is a crucial factor in research that allows nurses to avoid bias. Thus, nurses are responsible for the safety and care of their patients. By doing so, nurses must use their knowledge and skills to research the best possible solution. Hence, by utilizing evidence-based practice, nurses can provide the best care possible.
