Book Chapter/Annotated Bibliography Assignment Summarize Book Chapters and Create an Annotated Bibliography of Peer-Reviewed Research

This is ONE assignment…both the book chapter summaries and the annotated bibliography should be in ONE document.** YOUR CHOICE OF TOPIC IS (ONLY CHOOSE ONE): 1) “How do we increase volunteerism in the United States, and why is it good for us as a nation to do so?” –OR– 2) “What is e-volunteerism (also called “virtual volunteerism”), how does it work in practice, and what are the benefits?” a. Henney & Hackett (2019) Book Chapter Summary: For this part of the assignment, provide a one-paragraph summary of each chapter in the book. There are seven chapters, so you should have seven paragraphs. Make them informative and depthful–it should be clear you are reading the book. b. Annotated Bibliography: For this part of the assignment, your first task is to search PsychInfo, Academic Search Complete, and MedLine (MedLine can be particularly useful for HBS students) for keywords associated with your topic. These databases are available through the library web site–do NOT use google!! 1. More recent literature is better. 2. Do not go off-topic. You must read the abstract for each article you include. You cannot include articles that aren’t relevant and get credit for it. 3. You must include only peer reviewed articles, chapters, or books. Do not use google or any other internet search engine for your literature search. This will result in non-peer-reviewed materials, which you cannot use. a. Choose 4 or more journal articles from your search (see “a” above) that have specific relevance to your topic. **These articles must all be on YOUR topic…you will need to use this annotated bibliography next for your paper. You can’t write the paper if your four articles do not relate well to each other.** a. These articles must be from peer-reviewed publications. You may not use any magazine, webpage, blog, Psychology Today, Wikipedia, newspaper article or any other source that is not a peer-reviewed journal article. b. You may have to review/skim many articles before finding the those that are most pertinent to your topic. c. You must ask yourself, “What is the importance of this article to what I am studying?” and “What interesting information does this article give me that I can use in my paper?” If you can’t answer these questions, then you should not include the article. d. **As you are looking at each research study, make sure you are paying attention to the following information. This is how you critically evaluate and learn from the study you are looking at. i. Was the study in animals or people? ii. Does the study include people like you? iii. How big was the study? iv. Was it a randomized controlled clinical trial? v. Where was the research done? vi. If a new treatment was being tested, were there side effects? vii. Who paid for the research? viii. Who is reporting the results? i. Cite the article using APA style. ii. Write the annotation (summary) of the article a. Your annotation should follow the main parts of a research article—Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion. i. Introduction: Write one or two sentences that address the research topic/purpose of the paper and any specific hypotheses that are being tested. ii. Method: Write one or two sentences that state how many participants, any important characteristics of the participants, and what materials/procedures were used. iii. Results: Write one to three sentences that present results for the research question/hypothesis presented in “i” above. In other words, the introduction presented one or more questions, now you give the answers to the questions. iv. Discussion: Write one or two sentences that present the implications and importance of the results. iii. Please note that you may not use the abstract or any part thereof as your annotation (summary). You will have to redo the assignment (with a grade deduction) if you do this. Sample annotation [You can also research annotations on the internet and learn from additional examples.] Garst, J., & Bodenhausen, G. V. (1997). Advertising’s effects on men’s gender role attitudes. Sex Roles, 36(9-10), 551-572. The authors in this article examine whether media images of men influence the gender role attitudes that men express soon after being exposed to the images. The study examined males between the ages of 17 and 46. The men observed male models in magazine ads that portrayed traditionally masculine vs. androgynous images, and men of different ages. The results suggest that men’s gender role attitudes can be influence by the images of men they regularly see in the mass media. The authors conclude that, nontraditional men’s gender role attitudes may be unstable and susceptible to momentary influences.
