Abstract

There are several attributes of a professional nurse. I will identify two in which I possess, and how it

relates to my practice as an Emergency Department nurse. I will also discuss my outlook on the

Attributes, Influences, and the Effect of Advanced Education.

 

 

Communication is a basic foundation for any career. In nursing it is one of the most important

aspects of the job. Excellent communication skills are imperative to the safety and wellbeing of the

patients, and the emotional support of their families. With team and patient feedback, problem-solving

Wagner, she states, “Communication breakdown is the leading cause of medical errorssuch as gaps in

health care, incomplete or missing information, and medication errors.” Hand off reporting during

the admission process from the E.R. to the floor is imperative, and was put in place in our institution by

my superiors about three years ago. In this process we, the P.A., M.D., 2 R.N.s, the patient and their

families are present.  A full report on the patient’s history, code status, allergies, medications, tests done

and pending, results of all tests. As well as medications given, (including I.V. fluids), consults pending and

physician’s exams that occurred.  With the full team present as well as the patient and their families

there is less of a chance for an error. Hand off report is vital to provide accurate, up-to-date, and

Empathy is a must for any health care providers. In Nursing, empathy is our strongest attribute.

being a patient’s advocate is paramount to our patient’ssafety and wellbeing. Great nurses have

empathy for the pain and suffering of patients. Being able to feel compassion, and provide comfort is a

necessity, especially in a fast pace environment like the E.R. Getting to know your patientwill go a long

way in providing personalized care.

When you work in the same E.R. for any length of time you become familiar with your patients, as they

tend to utilize the same facility for there care. As an E.R. nurse you are the face of your hospital, a

greeter, sort of speak, and you need to use this opportunity to connect with your patientand learn all

you can about them. Having empathy for there situation can go a long way in aiding to the patients

recovery.

Studies show empathy declines during medical training. Without targeted interventions,

uncompassionate care and treatment devoid of empathy results in dissatisfied patients. (Riess, H.)  A

continuation of education is important in all roles of the medical team. Whether it be informal training

at your facility, or in furtherance of your degree.

My professional out look has been influenced by many factors. The people I have had the

pleasure of working with over the many years have played the biggest role in my professional outlook.

My superiors, my colleges, nurses, doctors and ancillary staff alike, and my patients have all played an

important role in my growth and learning. From each individual there was a different take away. One of

my favorite quotes that was said to me during a meeting by our Medical Director of Emergency Services

was “You don’t know, what you don’t know.” It sounds redundant but makes so much sense. After

hearing that, I began to understandadvanced learning was important, and that there was so much I

needed to learn even after 30 years of service. The effect of educational programs increases knowledge

and understanding of caring theory and related concepts, a more holistic approach to care, enhance

caring practice and improve self-perception. (Khouri, K.).

The effect this educational journey will have on me will be profound. The knowledge I obtain will

prepare me for the future of nursing and the healthcare environment as it changes and evolves.

Evidencebased practice is the cornerstone of nursing today. Higher education opens a wealth of
