Sunni Islam refers to one of the two branches of Islam. It is the largest branch with over 940 million adherents. Adherents of Sunni are called Sunnites or Sunnis and sometimes they call themselves Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaa’h. This implies the people of Muhammad tradition and consensus of Ummah or the ahl as-sunnah.

Globally, Sunni is the second largest body of religion after Christianity. It is also the second largest denomination in the world after Christianity. Sunnis believe that Muhammad companions were best Muslims. The belief has its basis on traditions of the prophet such as the one Abdullah, Masud’s son narrated. In the narration, Muhammad said that “the best of the people are my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them”. According to Sunnites, this view is also supported by the Quran.
