March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.Week 1 Research in Nursing Discussion Essay.

According to Melnyk, in order to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) consistently one must cultivate a spirit of inquiry, ask clinical questions, search for the best evidence, appraise the evidence, implement the evidence, evaluate outcomes, and then lastly share the results (Melnyk, 2010). This step by step process is very evident in the organization I chose to explore.
The organization that I chose to focus on is referred as the Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement (CEPI). CEPI, “conducts and supports research and evidence synthesis on health care delivery and improvement; advances decision and communication sciences to facilitate informed treatment and health care decision making by patients and their health care providers; explores how health information technology can improve clinical decision making and health care quality; catalyzes and promotes sustainability of improvements in clinical practice across health care settings through research, demonstration projects, and partnership development; and operates the National Center for Excellence in Primary Care Research(CEPI, 2014).”Week 1 Research in Nursing Discussion Essay.
CEPI consists of five divisions:
1. Evidence-Based Practice Center Program
2. U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Program
3. Division of Decision Science and Patient Engagement
4. Division of Health Information Technology
5. Division of Practice Improvement

CEPI is also home to AHRQ’s National Center for Excellence in Primary Care Research (NCEPCR).This organization is grounded in EBP and has made me appreciate the organization for what it is and what it stands for.

How does the focus of research and evidence-based practice (EBP) differ? Discuss the application of research findings into evidence-based nursing practice. Provide an example.

Research and evidence base practice are integral to advance practice nursing. According to the text book Understanding Nursing Research, Grove defines Evidence-Based Practice as “the conscientious integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient’s values and needs in the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective health care.” (Grove, 2017). What this simply means is that, it involves a problem-solving paradigm that carries out a systematic research to generate sound quality and cost-effective evidence base solutions to clinical and administrative issues by integrating the best available evidence to guide nursing care and improve overall patient outcomes.

The purpose of Evidence-Based Practice is to translate research into practice, increase the effectiveness of treatment, encourage some consistency in practice, utilize interdisciplinary approach in practice, encourage practice not based on tradition while at the same time making an impact in the improvement of practice by positively impacting practice and translating the knowledge.

Evidence-Based Practice also assess Institutional Review Board process related to intended project and the level of risk, benefits, confidentiality, generalizability, and publishing plans through the use of methods such as PICO or PICOT, Iowa Model of Evidence-based Practice, ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation, ask a focused clinical question, finding the best clinical evidence, critically appraise the evidence, apply evidence to practice and evaluate outcomes.

An example of an Evidence-Base Practice Project will be, for adult acute care medical surgical patients receiving blood transfusions, what are the best monitoring practice to assess for the incidence of adverse transfusion reactions?

According to Brian, “Research studies involve systematic, scientific inquiry to answer specific research questions or test hypotheses using disciplined, rigorous methods. While research is about investigation, exploration, and discovery, it also requires an understanding of the philosophy of science. For research results to be considered reliable and valid, researchers must use the scientific method in orderly, sequential steps”. (Brian,2018). The purpose of a research is to; answer the research question, test the hypothesis, describe, explain, predict, explore and discover while the impact of research on practice is to; generate new knowledge for practice and to seek to add to professional literature.

Research assesses Institutional Review Board in combination to other research methodology such as Scientific Method Research Question/Hypothesis Methods Interpretation of Data, implications for practice Dissemination of findings, qualitative research and quantitative research. An example of a research project will be a 3-year study examining symptoms clusters of patients with congestive heart failure.

Evidence-Based Practice and Research maybe similar in that there start by analyzing data, have a defined process, commit team to success, contributes to knowledge and evaluate outcome.
