This initiative is meant to encourage food industries to come up with products that are perceived to be healthy and hence reduce cases of obesity. The initiative also recommended banning of junk foods in school kiosks to reduce obesity among school going children (Rosenthal et al, 2017). The US has also encouraged after-school physical activity programs for school-going children to keep them away from TV and ensure they engage in physical activity. There is also a ban on child-directed fast food TV advertising targeted at reducing fast food consumption among children. |
What are the strengths of this policy? | Using taxes to increase prices can have an effect on the consumption of foods and beverages which may consequently lead to changes in weight. Since the law on taxes touches the point of manufacture, it is easy to implement and regulate consumption of such foods. Banning consumption of sugary products and advertisements for junk foods is an easier way to regulate than wait for people to consume and come up with requirements such as the waistline limitation as Japan did.
